Grand Challenges in Image and Video Processing
The primary focus of this talk will be on some Grand Challenges in Image and Video Processing. Before looking at these grand challenges, it is interesting and illuminating to go backwards in time to follow the evolution of the field, and to place the past and present challenges in the context of those that lie ahead. Therefore, this talk will begin with an abbreviated history of imaging, beginning with the camera obscura and ending with the plenoptic (light field) camera. After a short overview of the types of problems that are capturing the interest of the research community today, several grand challenges in image and video processing will be presented. These challenges are embodiments of Arthur C. Clark’s statement in 1962 that, “The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.” This talk is non-mathematical, without any equations, and should be of interest and accessible to anyone who has ever used a digital camera. Hopefully, it will stimulate some thoughts and discussions about where some interesting research opportunities lie that might move us in the direction of finding a solution to one of the grand challenges.
